Agency/Organization: Native Village of Gambell, USACE, ADEC
Document Summary:
The Native Village of Gambell (NVG), through funding from the Department of Defense, remediated abandoned DOD sites in Gambell, Alaska, including Sites 4A, 4E, 6A, 8A, 8D, 15, 17, 19, 20, 23, and 25B during the 2007 field season. The purpose of the cleanup was to excavate and remove known buried debris and incidental contaminated soils caused by past military activities. According to the assessment, samples from various assessments showed relatively high arsenic concentrations consistent with generally elevated arsenic levels on St. Lawrence Island, and 11 samples from Site 17 showed elevated levels of lead.
